Advocacy Manager, USA

    Classification: Full time (35 hours per week), exempt
    Location: Remote, Central or East Coast Time Zone
    Reports to: Policy & Advocacy Director, USA
    Salary Band: Manager; the transparent, formula-based salary range for this position is approximately $45,000-$67,000 determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years experience, location, job category and other factors.
    Benefits: Full coverage vision, dental and life insurance, FSA options, and Gold Tier ACA health coverage reimbursement; 20 vacation days, 15 sick days, and six paid holidays plus the week of December 25-January 1.

    About T1International
    T1International is a global grassroots patient advocacy organization led by people with and impacted by diabetes, with a focus on type 1 diabetes. We believe in a world where everyone with type 1 diabetes has the opportunity to thrive, with affordable and sustainable access to the medicine and supplies they need. We do not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry or any medical device manufacturer to maintain our independence and ability to speak out freely.

    About the role
    The role of the Advocacy Manager will be to support our advocates across the US as they carry out advocacy plans to improve the lives of people with diabetes in their communities. The person in this role will work closely with the Global Advocacy Manager, the Policy & Advocacy Director, and the Community Development Director to support volunteers and to organize on priority campaigns. 

    Role & Responsibilities

    Organizing and Volunteer Leadership Development (30%)

    • Engage and organize #insulin4all communities to grow and maintain an informed, active volunteer base who are fully engaged in T1International’s priorities
    • Coordinate and facilitate US Working Groups and Network calls, offer specific support in carrying out advocacy actions
    • Support Chapters and advocates with skills development to retain and support their goals
    • Be responsive to volunteers and manage Chapter data collection and analysis
    • Engage a variety of stakeholders including collaborators, allies, partners, coalitions, elected leaders, and others
    • Represent T1International at events, conferences, hearings, and other meetings, including public speaking
    • Track participation, campaign progress, and leadership development to achieving organizational goals in CRM (Salesforce)

    Campaigning and Communications (45%)

    • Develop and implement campaigns and community actions related to T1I’s priorities; implement specific strategies alongside volunteers
    • Manage email and digital action program, including building emails and actions on Action Network
    • Track digital mobilization impact
    • Increase T1International’s organizational presence through in-person and digital media tactics
    • Support with campaign copy and graphics
    • Assist with press, media, and more as needed

    Fundraising (20%)

    • Support overall team fundraising efforts
    • Support Action Network email fundraising program
    • Track campaign and communications impact

    Other (5%)

    • Advance T1I’s equity and inclusion commitments by engaging on ongoing racial justice competency building workshops, participating in internal equity meetings, and bringing a focus on antiracism to volunteer work and colleagues
    • Other duties, as assigned

    Core Competencies of Position

    • A genuine belief in T1International’s mission and vision with a strong understanding and commitment to equity and healthcare justice, alongside a passion for patient issues and the need to bring the patient voice to the forefront
    • Minimum of 2 years relevant experience in community organizing and/or social justice advocacy, preferably on issues that fall within T1I’s strategic priorities.
    • Comfortable executing big-picture community organizing and programming strategy and detailed tactical plans, and moving between these levels
    • Experience virtually facilitating
    • Demonstrated cultural competency working directly with and building power and leadership with diverse communities – such as volunteers, organizers, local leaders, grassroots influencers, students, parents, or teachers – across differences of race, political party, etc.
    • Strong volunteer/stakeholder management skills, including but not limited to: exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to form groups and navigate and resolve conflict in a manner that values and respects relationships with colleagues and volunteers
    • Excellent organizational and administrative skills; keen attention to detail; ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects at various stages of completion with minimal direct supervision
    • Good problem-solving skills and a positive, ‘let’s make this work’ attitude with sound judgment, flexibility, and determination
    • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including writing and editing experience
    • Serve as an external ambassador of the organization, making formal and informal presentations to diverse audiences including testifying, making speeches, conferences and other meetings
    • Excels with Google Workspace, digital mobilizing platforms, and online communication platforms 

Hours and expectations

  • T1I is a purely remote office environment; you will work with colleagues and advocates who are based across the US and the UK. You should be prepared to work from home or a location of your choosing during work hours that overlap with Eastern States. Some travel is required.
  • This is an exempt role which requires flexibility within a 35 hour work week as there are several monthly meetings and calls with volunteers on weeknights and very occasionally, on weekends
