About T1International
T1International is a global grassroots patient advocacy organization led by people with and impacted by diabetes, with a focus on type 1 diabetes. We believe in a world where everyone with type 1 diabetes has the opportunity to thrive, with affordable and sustainable access to the medicine and supplies they need. We do not accept funding from the pharmaceutical industry or any medical device manufacturer to maintain our independence and ability to speak out freely. We support individuals and organizations on the ground that are working to make life better for people with type 1 diabetes.
At T1International, we value being patient-led, independent, transparent, inclusive, bold and hopeful. You can see more about our values and learn more about T1International on the rest of our website.
The role of T1International’s Board of Trustees is:
- Risk Management, Governance and Oversight: Although day-to-day operations are led and managed by T1International’s staff team and the Executive Director, the Board is ultimately responsible for the overall governance of the organization: ensuring legal and ethical compliance, and providing oversight of the organization's operations. The Board assesses and manages risk to ensure the organization can effectively navigate challenges and opportunities.
- Strategic Direction: Board members are consulted to define and refine the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals, working with the staff team to develop and ultimate approvals of strategic plans.
- Financial Stewardship: The Board oversees the organization’s financial health by approving budgets, ensuring sound financial practices, and monitoring financial performance. They also play a role in fundraising efforts and securing financial resources. Additionally, the Treasurer is responsible for meeting annually with auditors, reviewing and approving the Form 990, and supporting the Operations Manager with the annual audit and supporting charitable solicitation registrations as needed. The Treasurer must be based in the US and ideally familiar with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Support and Evaluation: Board members support the Executive Director (and, as directed, other staff) by providing guidance, expertise, resources, and feedback. The Board Chair and Personnel Committee annually evaluates the performance of the Executive Director with consultation from the Board. As invited, the Board also ensures the T1International Team has the support they need to achieve the organization’s goals and strategic plan, inclusive of contributing specific skills and knowledge to meet organizational goals.
- Advocacy and Representation: As directed, Board members represent the organization in high-level advocacy activities, building relationships with decision-makers, stakeholders, donors, funders, partners, and collaborators.
Expected Commitments:
We are a volunteer Board of 6-12 people that are interviewed and selected by the Board of Trustees’ Personnel Committee. Each member serves a two-year term, with the expectation of renewal for additional terms. The Board of Trustees typically meets virtually as an entire Board four times a year (March, July, October, December). Each Trustee is also expected to join a Committee and attend relevant virtual meetings, be responsive to emails and communications, and work effectively as a member of the team while contributing an independent perspective. Responsibilities typically take about 4-12 hours per month.
All Board members must commit to having a full understanding of T1International’s programs and our approach to change, as well as exercise good independent judgement. Board members are also expected to participate in all Board meetings and be prepared for efficient and in-depth discussion of agenda items. They serve as strong financial stewards of T1International’s budget and operations and support T1International by engaging in active fundraising and/or participating in fundraising campaigns, making T1Interational a philanthropic priority. Board members serve as an ambassador for all things T1International. Join us and be part of this exciting grassroots advocacy movement that is making a big impact!
