Diabetes in Humanitarian Settings
Diabetes does not pause during wars, economic crises, or displacement. It requires continuous, uninterrupted access to insulin, monitoring supplies, food, and care. When health systems collapse or people are forced to flee, people with diabetes are among the most vulnerable, and among the least visible.
T1International has been documenting and advocating on diabetes in humanitarian settings for years. In Gaza today, nearly all insulin circulating is expired, test strips have almost entirely disappeared, and routine medical care has collapsed. People are rationing their last pens with no certainty about when they will get more. With the support of advocates, T1International pushed fora humanitarian checkpoint to be opened for medical aid into Gaza and has collaborated with Human Rights Watch to document the insulin access crisis in the United States as what it is: a human rights crisis.
T1International amplifies the voices of people with diabetes living through crises, and calls on governments, humanitarian agencies, and global health institutions to make diabetes a visible and funded priority in emergency response.
T1International is a proud member of IADA, International Alliance for Diabetes Action (opens in a new tab)
We need the world to hear us. Our voice is all we have left. We cannot change this reality, and we cannot bring in help on our own. So please, listen to us.
